The Statistics program at Mesa State emphasizes the application
of Statistics but also provides a strong background in theory.
Students with a minor or concentration in statistics will obtain
insight into the relationship of this discipline and real world
applications. The courses in Probability and Statistics or Business
Statistics as well as courses in Statistical Methods, Correlation
and Regression, Sampling Techniques, Experimental design, and
Topics in Statistics such as Biological Sampling and Environmental
Statistics will aide in obtaining this goal. Students will be
exposed to theoretical statistics through courses in Mathematical
Statistics including distribution theory. Independent Study is
also available for work on projects of special interest to students
or undergraduate research projects.
Students with majors in Biology, Business, Computer Science,
Geology, Environmental Restoration, Physics, and other disciplines
dealing with data analysis are particular encouraged to seek a
minor in Statistics.
Students work with various statistical software packages such
as MINITAB and SAS as an integral part of their study, both in
and out of the classroom. Other software such as Maple and Quattro
Pro are available in computer labs for use in statistics.
Class sizes are small and students receive individual help from
faculty. Each student can receive help from an academic advisor
in planning his/her individual program. Scholarships are also
available to students. Opportunities are available for students
to present papers at meeting of professional organizations or
just to faculty and fellow students at seminars held by various
departments in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
