Nu Chapter -
National Honor Society for Earth Sciences |
|
The Society of Sigma Gamma Epsilon
Criteria:National Honor Society for the Earth Sciences,
has for its objectives the scholastic and scientific advancement
of its members and the extension of friendship and assistance
among colleges, universities, and scientific schools for
the advancement of Earth Science. Membership in Zeta Nu
Chapter of Sigma Gamma Epsilon is open to continuing Earth
Science majors with at least twelve credit hours of Earth
Science course work completed with a minimum GPA of 3.00.
Qualified students are reviewed and may be nominated each
semester.
The Zeta Nu chapter of Sigma Gamma Epsilon is located on
the campus of Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Zeta Nu includes students from both the the Geology and
Environmental Restoration and Waste Management Programs.
Currently we have about 20 active members and are growing
each year. Zeta Nu is responsible for the publication of
the "Uncompahgre Journal". The journal provides
an academic forum for students, faculty, and others interested
in furthering the advancement of the Earth Sciences. Over
the last few years our chapter has provided local elementary
schools with collections of rocks found in the local area
along with geologic descriptions.
With the Geology Club and Outdoor Program of Mesa State
College, Zeta Nu provides a social avenue for its members,
which include the adopt-a-highway program, field trips,
and barbecues. In the 1996-97 academic year, we co-hosted
the eighth annual Western Slope Collegiate Geological Field
Conference with the Mesa State College Department of Physical
and Environmental Science. Over 80 students and faculty
from five institutions attended the two-day field conference.
Upcoming activities include the support of scholastic field
trips, various outdoor activities, and the publication of
the Uncompahgre Journal.

Mesa State College Geology Club
The Geoclub offers many field trips and fun activities
such as trips to Canyonlands National Park, Arches National
Park, fossil hunting, gems and minerals, and a mountain
bike excursion. This past winter the club sponsored a ski/snowshoe
trip to Powderhorn Ski Resort on the Grand Mesa. The Geoclub
is a sponsor of the Unaweep Canyon Adopt-a-Highway program
and holds a highway cleanup every semester. The club is
always looking for new members. Come join us for some "fun
in the sun" activities.

Grand Junction Geological Society
The Grand Junction Geological Society is affiliated
with America Association of Petroleum Geologists, the international
professional organization of 20,000+ geologists and geophysicists.
The Mesa State College Geology Program is associated with
GJGS. Members of the GJGS are professional geologists who
are employed by oil/gas, environmental, and mining industries
as well as government agencies and educational institutions.
These geologists have many years of experience. Meeting
is held in the Saccomanno Lecture Hall of the new science
building every 3rd Wednesday of each month from September
through May at 7:30 PM. Each lecture features a guest speaker
who is professional geologist presenting current research.
Publications and field trips are available: Previous field
trips included the Dinosaur Triangle and a short trip to
the Colorado National Monument. Students are encouraged
to meet professional geologists and join in the many activities
sponsored by the GJGS. Student rates are only $2 a year.
