Physics
The physics program at Mesa State is patterned after the mainstream
of physics departments nationwide. With a curriculum centered
on dynamics, fields, relativity, and quantum theory, physics
graduates are prepared for a variety of scientific careers.
Typically, Mesa State physics graduates pursue graduate study
in physics, engineering, and related academic work. Others embark
on careers in research, business, or science teaching.
From quarks to black holes, from superconductivity to lasers,
professional opportunities in physics have never been greater.
Space exploration, astronomy, astrophysics, and electronics
research are but a few of the disciplines that require the
special insights of physics. At Mesa State, physics students
are encouraged to participate in the excitement of modern
physics and to work alongside faculty on current research
problems.
The American Institute of Physics has established a chapter
of Sigma Pi Sigma, the national physics honor society, at
Mesa State. If you are interested in physics excellence, you'
ll be pleased to know that Mesa State is the only small college
to have a chapter of the honor society. Weekly seminars, regional
meetings, and student research all contribute to the preparation
of students for professional activity in science. All physics
faculty members hold Ph.D. degrees.
