Academic Advising

—Academic Advising is available from two sources:
the MSC Faculty and the
Advising & Career Center Staff

Advising Staff
The Advising and Career Center Staff primarily assist students with undeclared majors. Advising and Career staff guide students in major and career exploration and in scheduling classes that will fulfill the General Education Requirements.
Major Exploration

Academic Advisors can assist students with matching majors to career aspirations as well as evaluating how a student's coursework fits MSC degree programs and General Education Requirements. Advising & Career Center staff can also assist students in identifying their interests by evaluating career/interest assessments. To began major and career exploration, visit the following sites:

Undeclared Student Advising
Undeclared students are assigned to the Advising & Career Center and must meet with an advisor prior to registration to discuss course selection and to have their UM hold removed. Once a student has chosen a major, the student is directed to the appropriate academic department and encouraged to consult a Faculty Advisor prior to each semester. There, the Academic Department Contact will officially declare/change the student's major and minor, provide a program sheet, and assign the student to a Faculty Advisor. To learn about Program Sheets or about how to declare a major, see the Declare a Major page.
What is an UM Hold?
Students who have not officially declared a major after the first semester will have an Undeclared Major (UM) hold placed on their account. This hold will prevent the student from registering for the next semester. To have the hold removed, the student must meet with an Academic Advisor or declare a major. Visit the Advising & Career Center, located in LHH 127, or call 970-248-1177 for more information or to schedule an appointment. To declare a major, see the appropriate Academic Department Contact.
Timeline for Major Selection

Students are advised to declare a major by their sophomore year. Majors can be changed multiple times*. Determining a major by the sophomore year will help avoid a delay in graduation. To discuss major and/or career possibilities, contact the Advising & Career Center to schedule an appointment.

* NOTE: different majors have different course requirements. Changing a major can delay graduation.

Faculty Advisors
Students who have declared a major should seek the advice of a Faculty Advisor. Having a good relationship with one’s faculty advisor is beneficial and highly recommended. Below are some of the ways faculty can assist students.
Advising & Signatures for Graduation

The purpose of a Faculty Advisor is to assist in the process of degree completion. Students are required to have a Faculty Advisor's signature on their Program Sheets in order to graduate.
A Faculty Advisor should be assigned when a student declares a major and/or minor. To see a listing of departments and contacts, visit the Academic Departments page. Students can find out if they have been assigned a Faculty Advisor by logging into their MAVZONE account.

Career Information
Faculty can also be an invaluable resource for career information, experience, and contacts! Faculty may assist students in gathering information about careers related to a degree field, the job-market for an occupation, available career opportunities and experience, as well as career and graduate school contacts.
Course Selection

Faculty can help in selecting courses that will match students’ interests and career/educational goals. Also, certain majors (such as Elementary Education, Chemistry, Nursing, Music, or Theatre) require the completion of specific courses early on. Visiting a faculty advisor every semester is important to remaining on track.
-- For tips on how to create a schedule, see the Scheduling Tips page.

Internships
Faculty are also a great resource for finding out about available internships and how they apply to degree programs.
Letters of Recommendations

Letters of Recommendation from faculty may be needed for career and scholarship opportunities.
Faculty are more likely to recommend internships, letters or recommendation, and job opportunities to students they know--so make an appointment with your faculty advisor today!

Obtaining Post-graduate Information
If a student is interested in going to graduate school, Faculty Advisors are the best resource for information. Faculty can advise students about the application process, course selection, activities that may be beneficial, and in identifying potential graduate programs.
Referrals & Campus Information
Faculty can refer students to other faculty or staff who have expertise that better match a student’s needs or interests. Faculty can also be a great resource for information about on-campus clubs, organizations, and activities that can lead to future career opportunities or provide students with the necessary experience for prospective careers.
