Musings of a Barrio Sack Boy The poems in Lopez's "Barrio Sack Boy" recollect his memories of his childhood spent in Albuquerqe. Many of the memories focus around working at the local grocery store, the Catholic church he attended, and the people he repeatedly encountered in the two places. Written in English, Spanish, and Spanglish, the poems express the complicated structure of the society Lopez resided in, and his journey discovering its complexities.
"The poems of Luis Lopez are marvelous little vignettes into the heart
and soul of a Hispanic barrio. Lopez has the storyteller's gift of characterization
and his poems give life to all the family members and neighbors who populated
the beloved neighborhood of his childhood. Lopez's descriptive details
create living and breathing characters whom we immediately recognize. To
read these poems is to hear all the secrets of life Lopez learned as he
grew up. These poems will resonate deeply in the reader, for they tell
the universal truths of life in the way all great poems do - they will
remind you of all the joys and sorrows of your own life. Every neighborhood
deserves a poet as gifted as Lopez to keep its spirit alive in the world." $10.00 |
