Campus Safety
The Department of Housing & Residence Life is committed
to the safety and security of all our residents. We actively
practice and promote various safety measures such as:
• If a resident's key is lost or stolen Housing & Residence
Life has the lock changed and new keys made. Room doors to
which a key has been lost must have the locks changed to maintain
maximum security for all residents. The key to on-campus rooms
and apartments is an important element in maintaining security.
As such, it is imperative that residents handle their key and
MAVcard with the utmost of care. A misplaced or stolen key
compromises the security of belongings of all residents.
• In all of our residential halls, we further ensure safety by
locking all of the exterior doors. By keeping these doors locked
at all times, only residents and their invited guests will
have access to the facility. In order to ensure that this security
measure is working for all residents, we ask residents to be
certain that the door closes tightly behind them when they
come into or leave the facility. It is imperative that these
doors not be propped open or tampered with in any way. Propping
the doors open compromises security for everyone that lives
there. Additionally, this often causes the doors to become
misaligned. When that happens, the doors do not close properly
and security is compromised.
It is also up to the resident to not “tailgate” other
residents coming into the halls. This “tailgateing” is
what happens when one resident uses his/her card to gain access
into the hall and then one or more students follow the student
into the hall without using their card.
• An important element of safety and security has to do with
fire safety. Rules and regulations related to fire safety fall
under the authority of the Grand
Junction Fire Department.
Fire drills are conducted periodically throughout the academic
year to allow residents an opportunity to practice building
evacuation procedures. These drills are an important part of
our security program and should be taken seriously. It's important
that residents are familiar with the evacuation route of their
area, as well as that of other areas they may frequent in the
building. Evacuation routes are posted throughout the facilities.
• All hall rooms and apartments are equipped with smoke detectors.
All halls are equiped with a fire alarm system to allow residents
to be notified if or when there is a fire or smoke.
• Valuable items such as computers, bicycles, television sets,
or expensive calculators can be engraved with a student's social
security number and recorded on paper for safe keeping. We
encourage all of our residents to have valuable items engraved.
Please contact the Grand
Junction Police Department at the
Substation located across from Walnut Ridge Apartments or call
(970) 248-1919.
•
There are many Blue-Light
Phones located through the MSC campus
that provide a direct connection to the Grand Junction Police
Department, staffed 24-hours-a-day simply by pushing the “call” button.
• The MSC Campus features an Escort Program designed to
provide a more safe travel for both male and female students, faculty
and staff either to or from a destination on campus. The service
covers all of the main campus and up to two blocks off campus. Available
every day as a 8:00 p.m. to 12:00
a.m. for your safety call 260-2683.
• We encourage students to always be aware of their surroundings
and to report any suspicious persons or activities to the police
or a member of their living area staff.
