Questions About The Climbing Wall

What hours is the climbing wall open?
We have an attendant on duty most every afternoon and evening, seven days a week. Please check the climbing wall page for the specific hours this semester.

Do you have to have previous climbing experience to use the climbing wall?
No. Novice as well as experienced climbers can have fun and success on the wall.

What is the risk of using the climbing wall?
There is some inherent risk. We test the experienced climbers of their knowledge of knots and belaying techniques prior to their getting on the wall. The novice climber must learn knots and belaying techniques prior to climbing. This can be taught by the climbing wall attendant in a short period of time.

How safe is the climbing wall?
Very safe. A climbing wall attendant is always on duty to supervise the climbers and belayers. The equipment and ropes are checked on a daily basis.

Do I have to bring any special equipment or shoes with me?
No. Shoes that can be worn on the basketball court can be used on the wall. We provide all the necessary gear (ropes, carabineers, grigri's, and harnesses).

Do I have to sign a waiver before I use the climbing wall the first time?
Yes. The waiver is kept active for 12 months.

Do I have to provide a partner in order to climb?
No, but it would be best to do so. Nobody climbs without a partner. Sometimes there will be another climber at the wall willing to belay you. If the wall is not busy, the supervisor might also belay you. However, its best to bring a friend with you so that you will not have to wait.

How many stations are there? How large is the wall?
There are seven top rope stations. The wall is 28' high and has 812 square feet of climbing surface.

Do you allow lead climbing on your wall?
No. At this time, we only allow top rope climbing.

Can I boulder climb without an attendant on duty?
No. We are not equipped to monitor the wall 24/7. Instead, we have found the times that most students want to climb and center our hours around those times.
