Questions About Equipment Services

How and where do I check out or rent equipment?
All equipment can be checked out and in at the Information Desk at the entrance to the Student Recreation Center. You must present your MAVcard, which will be scanned along with the equipment ID card. Once the equipment is returned, the equipment ID card is scanned again and the equipment is logged back in.

For how long can I keep equipment that I check out? Can I take the equipment out of the Student Recreation Center?
Unless otherwise specified in advance, all equipment that is checked out must be checked back the same day and before closing. With the exception of Frisbees and soccer balls, all equipment must remain within the Student Recreation Center/Saunders Fieldhouse complex.

How much gear can I rent out at one time?
You may rent out as much gear as you personally need to conduct your activity. Please be aware that you are financially responsible for all equipment that you check out.

What happens if I fail to check in the equipment in the same day?
You risk the possibility of having to pay for the replacement cost of the equipment. In most cases, the department would rather recover the equipment than bill you for it and purchase new equipment.

Am I financially responsible for damaged, lost or stolen equipment?
Yes. The equipment is checked out for free or rented to you at a low price with the understanding that the equipment will be returned in good working order for other students to check out or rent. Therefore, you must take full financial responsibility for any equipment that prohibits that goal from being achieved.

Why do I have to rent some items while other equipment items are available free of charge?
The only items that we rent out are racquetball rackets, climbing wall shoes, and bath towels. History has taught us that racquetball rackets must be constantly rotated since they receive much abuse. It is the judgement of the Director that instead of trying to collect replacement fees for every bent racket, it is better to charge a fee and replace them when necessary. Climbing shoes are not required for climbing on the indoor wall, but rather upgrades the experience. Bath towels are included in the fee that covers locker rental, therefore, it is only fair to rent towels out to those participants who request a towel.

What equipment is available for free check-out?
Badminton rackets, basketballs, lap counters, eyeguards, jump ropes, soccer balls, volleyballs, weight belts, work out towels, and wallyball equipment. In addition, those using the climbing wall can check out carabiners and harnesses.

What outdoor recreation equipment is available for rental?
Outdoor recreation equipment (camping, water craft, climbing, etc.) is checked out through the Outdoor Program.
